Jack and Neal Original Watercolor Ink Painting by Kaysha Lacy
Inspired by a deep dive I did on the 1950’s Beat Generation writers including Jack Kerouac. This was based on a picture of Jack standing alone in front of a bar neon sign but I decided to “recreate” it with Neal Cassidy to his side - his friend and inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in the book, “On the Road”. After reading Big Sur and getting a glimpse into the alcoholic depression that Jack went through, especially at the end of his life. I wanted to make a scene where he wasn’t actually alone at that moment in time, because by most accounts, he was a man who spent a lot of time alone in his head.
This piece is on high-quality watercolor paper sized 14.5×12in - The dark blacks of the ink are used to paint the night sky offset the dreamy neon glow of the “BAR” sign behind the subjects.
